School, Fandom, and Writing. Oh My!
Tuesday I went down to discuss "the thesis" with my advisor. After several instances of looking like an idiot over what I knew and did't know -- I wasn't expecting this to become a twenty questions session -- I rebounded with all the useless information I DO know. She informed me that I don't have much more research to do and basically it's just a matter of fleshing out some ideas and reorganizing.

Um wow. That sounded so final. I was so happy!

In other news, I have decided to take a year off. Just one year. None of this five year crap I did last time. So when fall rolls around I will be filling out applications. This gives me some breathing room and plenty of time to find additional aid in the event I don't get any. Even though doctorate programs have stipands and all, one can't take chances.

This also means I need to find a real job for a year, one preferably that will advance my career *groans* Do you know how hard it is to find jobs that have some kind of anthropological/archaeological bent to them? I'd love to teach at a community college for a year or work in a museum or something. But I've got no experience. *sigh*

As for fandom, I am still annoyed with it. I'm finding just about everything to be hypocritical. Then there are those who "step all over you to get ahead." Ahead? Of what? It's fandom! I don't understand. It's awful. I'm not having fun and I am not enjoying it, which is in turn affecting my fanfic writing. I am trying to find counter manuveurs to work around said annoyance so that I can get back to enjoying myself. It may be that I've lost a lot of fandom buddies lately, too. This is a work in progress.

tealc_ficathon is still open, too. Though I have done a lousy job at promoting it. Or explaining it. But that's been covered by the lovely people who are already signed up for it and are pimping it like crazy.

Still need to post the darn Teal'c Challenge too. Crap. I'd have already done it if I hadn't been sitting here feeling sorry for myself (That's a whole 'nother story.)

And finally, writing. Fanfic novel that is eating away my life is progressing. I'm up to page 59 now and over 20,000 words. Go me. Original novel ideas are coming together more and more each day. It looks as though I shall be starting my manuscript soon *gasp* Also working on my short story and will be sending that out soon.

Phew. And life keeps marching on...

I told you that you explained the ficathon fine! I just hadn't understood the the appeal. It wasn't you, it was me! Really. And I always planned to do the challenge. I've already got a plot bunny for that!

As for the rest of fandom, sigh. My relative newness and mental incapacity to remember people's names keeps me oblivious to most individual battles and I only retain the broad strokes of the "factions".

As a note to cheer you up fandom wise, I just finished wrestling with the StargateFanAwards nomination form. IT STARTED TODAY! Anyone else reading this, go forth and nominate!

I nommed tealc_fic for website and Shadow Walkers (among a host of other people's fics too--but you're not interested in my laundry list).

Congrats on the thesis! :-)

Oh wow, that started today? Do you know how long noms are open? I'll have to go check it out.

Thanks for the noms though. I didn't even think people liked Shadow Walkers. Heh.

I hope to get my poor novel that good, done. Guh, it's so long!

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. Oh, and stay with the newness and out of fandom wars. Stay to places that keep you happy. So much better that way ;)

It started today (they claim March 1, but the website wasn't working before today), and I think the noms go on until the end of April.

They've gone back to having categories for gen/het/slash (yay!), but all you have to do is list author, title, web address, and author's addy. Oh, and don't try and nominate a bunch at once because the system freezes (what? it was my first year, I was excited and made a list of other people's stories and stuff I liked that were still eligible).

Congrats on making a decision about school, while the job-hunt is a pain in the keester(sp?) having the decision made and out of the way must take some stress off your shoulders. Also, WOOHOO about the thesis!

Fandom stuff - don't know what to tell ya about the fandom wars, losing friends in fandom is no fun though. Hopefully the LJ comm & your Yahoogroup are still fun places in the fandom, we don't wanna lose you to burnout or disgust for fandom politics. That's fantastic about your novel though, after my move I'll be able to sit down and catch up on what I've missed so far I think. Can't wait, there's a lack of gen fic novels from what I can tell.

I'm glad writing is going well for you! Good luck on the job search.

Wow, I found your journal through Stargate and find out that your looking to get a degree in anthropology and archeaology? Very cool. I am studying the same thing at the moment (though I am working on finishing up my Bacheolors, not quite as far along as it sounds like you are).

Finding something throughout the year in that field is definetly difficult (I work full time at a Health Food Store to pay for school - I'm not sure thats going to help me on a dig, lol). Luckily we have an Anthropology/Archaeology museum here in Philly that is about 40 minutes from my house. Good oppurtunity for volunteering anyway - I plan on doing that to get my foot in the door and hope something develops from that.

I really hope things work out for you this coming year and I would love to chat about anthro/archaeology as well Stargate - I swear I am very layed back about my fandoms *g* and I have felt the same thing latley about some of the places I've been in regards to the fandoms. Its supposed to be something fun to take our minds off of RL for a little while - not something stressful that people need to take way too seriously!

Do you mind if I friend you?

Next year I hope for a doctorate. Eeep! But I am getting ahead of myself. I know exactly what it is like to pay through college. I've been doing that all my life and unfortunately I have loans up the wazoo. But it's school and anth and I couldn't have it any other way.

If I can't nail me a real job after I graduate, I'm hoping to volunteer at some museums while I work somewhere else. There are plenty of museums here in Massachusetts.

I'm always up for new friends! Just so you know, I am not a Daniel/Cameron person, but I don't actively hunt down people that like pairings that aren't my own. I'm more of a gen girl that's dabbled in some of the ship and slash in the fandom. As long as everyone respects each other, I'm cool. My journal is a lot of SG-1 talk and anth talk. You have been warned ;)

We're supposed to be having fun!

Hey, funny. One day we might be collegues ;)

How funny would that be if we ended up working together someday :)

I may be a D/C girl but I really love the show for what it is - I'm not someone who only watches the show for the D/C moments or whatever ship someone happens to be into. I have friends that love slash and we talk about it - but then I have friends who are totally not into it and we just talk about the show - so its all good *g*

Gee, a livejournal where most of the time is spent talking about Stargate and anthropology - I'm not sure if I'll be able to handle that, lol.
