Despite the hardships he'd suffered, Daniel had always considered himself a lucky man.
He'd had drive. He'd had his parents' memory. He'd had the knowledge that something else was out there. He'd had hope.
It was hope that had kept him going. Hope had propelled him through school and through life when it seemed like everything and everyone was against him.
He never thought of it for too long. Not when truth – not when hope – was lurking around the corner just out of his grasp. Hope had blossomed in the form of a beautiful desert rose, gentle to the touch, blossoming in the sunlight, but with fierce roots that spoke of rebellion and inner strength.
Hope had made him strong. Sha're was hope.
And now, Sha're was gone.
Daniel let the tears flow freely, tasting the salty bitterness of death in his mouth, longing after the flower wilting beside him.
He touched her cheek. He knew their love would never die. Yet, he could not help but think of all that he had lost.
