Taken this from multiple people on my flist. Since I have a bunch of new flisters (and for those of you vets that might be curious), I thought I'd bite.

Stargate SG-1

Fave character(s): Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill, Sam Carter, Teal'c, General Hammond, Cameron Mitchell, Janet Fraiser...um, all of them??? Really, in 2003 I would have said DANIEL!!! and Jack (and Sam), but now it's really all of them. Except Vala. I don't love her, but I don't hate her either. (Nothing against CB who I think can really act.)
Fave ship(s): I'm gen. I don't ship on the show. I like the friendships. But that being said...in the fandom, I'll play with show ships.
Ships that I like and I wouldn't be opposed to: Daniel/Sha're, Daniel/Sam, Jack/Sara, Sam/Barrett.
Ships that are fun: Cam/Sam, Teal'c/Vala, Thor/Heimdahl, Sam/Rodney, Sam/Teal'c
Ships that don't bother me either way: Daniel/Janet, Sam/Pete, Jack/Janet, Daniel/Sarah, Cam/Vala, Sam/Martouf.
I also don't mind slash, but I find most of it is worse than some of the worst het.
Ships I don't like: Daniel/Vala. Full stop. Can't stand them. I like it when Vala is as far away from Daniel as possible. Though, at least in S10 they have been more tolerable and I can handle some of the friendship scenes. Strangely enough, my kneejerk reaction to Daniel/Vala (and RDA leaving the show) has allowed my hardcore stance on Sam/Jack to soften. A few years ago, I would have put a hex on Sam/Jack. Now, it doesn't bother me. But don't expect me to start shipping them anytime soon.
Characters I don't like: I pretty much like them all. I don't hate Vala. I just don't like the Daniel/Vala show. I don't hate Jonas, but I don't like how he was always portrayed. My beef is more with the writing than the characters.
Fave episode(s): All time fave is One False Step. But...I love eps for just about every character. Crystal Skull, despite the crappy effects. Fire and Water. The First Ones. Lifeboat. Legacy. But I also enjoy any team feeling eps, whichever those might be. I love TFBTGOG. 1969. Fair Game. The S1 finale/S2 premier. Jolinar's Memories and the other one that goes with it. (I'm a bad fan!) Changling. Avatar. Singularity. Foothold. Cold Lazurus. Zero Hour. Shades of Grey. Fail Safe for Hammond. Avalon for Cameron. I'll stop now...
Reason(s) I started watching: I was bored. I had no show at that time. I wasn't happy with Smallville. X-Files had ended. Firefly had ended. And I was in a job I disliked and longed for my anthropology days of undergraddom. So, I caught the S4 reruns in fall 2003 and then caught the Monday night stacks and the S7 first-half reruns while buying the DVDs ;) I fell for Daniel first because he was doing things I missed. I quickly proceeded to apply to grad school because I kept getting mad he was doing things I wanted to do. Heh heh. I also enjoyed Jack, mainly for the Daniel and Jack friendship and banner. I was secretly shipping Sam/Daniel, but you didn't hear that from me. (And Sam's perosnality is a lot like mine, so I was excited for her.) I ignored Teal'c :( But then I found fandom and got sucked in.
Reason(s) I continued watching: Team. The banter. Mythology. And the entire concept was fascinating to me. You know, until they stopped using the Stargate...;) But really, the cast just had such great chemistry I couldn't stop.
Thing(s) I don't like about this show: I find their ship is forced. If TPTB would just let the characters naturally flow, I don't think ship would be an issue with me. I saw Pete as a plot device. I found a lot of the later Sam/Jack was forced while the early seasons (when they just let the characters be) Sam and Jack had better chemistry. (All the characters did, frankly.) TPTB are now doing the same with Daniel/Vala. When it's not being shoved at us, their scenes are nice. When they hit you over the head with it, it's very annoying. and while I am talking about ships, I hate the Prometheus, the Odyssey and any other fungly space ships they have that takes away from the Stargate. I possibly hate those ships more than Daniel/Vala ;)

So there you go. And yet, I still refuse any character or pairing bashing. I may not like certain pairings or stuff on the show, but it's so much fun knowing people that do :)

ETA: I guess I should say there is some vague talk about seasons 1 through the first half of S10 in the comments, but nothing spoilery to my knowledge.

The same thing happened to me. Not so much with the Daniel/Vala (I love them, sorry *g*), but the lack of Jack on the show made me like S/J more for some reason. Once upon a time, I hated the very thought of them, but with RDA gone and TPTB no longer cramming "shippy" scenes into the show left right and center, the idea doesn't bother me nearly as much. I still have issues with their relationship, I still can't watch the scene in Heroes where Bregman (sp?) asks Sam about her relationship with Jack without cringing, but I sometimes find myself reading fic about the two of them and getting a big goofy grin. Go figure.

I don't bare my teeth when I see Daniel/Vala anymore but that's mainly because I feel like S10 as done a fairly good job at toning them down. I still don't like the ship, but my main issue with Daniel/Vala scenes period was that I didn't like the person Daniel became around her and that he didn't get to interact with anyone else. I probably wouldn't be so testy if I felt the distribution of screentime was a little more even. I mean we rarely even get any scenes between Daniel and Teal'c anymore :(

But I don't begrudge you for loving them ;)

my main issue with Daniel/Vala scenes period was that I didn't like the person Daniel became around her and that he didn't get to interact with anyone else.

Actually, I can see that. There are lots of scenes in early season 9 where Vala is being completely ridiculous, and Daniel is annoyed and snarky that I don't like. I think I fell for them when Vala started to soften up. She was still a little ridiculous, but it wasn't over the top anymore and you started to see that there was more to her than an over-sexed con artist. And then Daniel started to see that and respond in kind and...well, that's when I started to get shippy.

I agree with you about screen time. Putting the same two people together all the time gets boring.

It's like Cam and Teal'c. Man, I love their interaction but they can spend two seconds away from each other. It's okay. You can out them back together, but please let them interact with some other people.

Meanwhile, Sam ends up being the cheese that stands alone. ;)

If TPTB would just let the characters naturally flow, I don't think ship would be an issue with me.

No kidding! Sam and Jack have a great natural chemistry together but whenever they have scenes that are obviously designed to be shippy I sit there cringing because it feels completely awkward and faked. Silly show! No forcing ships!

I just don't think TPTB can write ship. They've done it okay before, but most of the time I cringe. Just let them be and people will see what they want see anyway ;)

I know - it's odd because I think they did the Daniel-Sha're relationship really well and I loved the whatever-it-was between Sam and Martouf. And, in general, they're really good at how well Sam handles very men leering at/flirting with her. And yet things like Jack/Sam they handle so badly. I don't get it.

Like in the end of Evolution - that moment of awkward staring between them that would have been fine if Jack had asked, "so, lunch" 30 seconds earlier before the mooning eyes. Guh!

Ah, see I was never a fan of Daniel/Sha're as we saw on the show. I liked the movie version much much better. And then, in Forever in a Day, Sha're got so interested and then, boom, dead.

Sam and martoud never bothered me. I think the difference between something like Sam/Martouf or Daniel/Sha're and a pairing like Sam/Jack is that Sha're and Martouf weren't regulars. With Sam and Jack regualr cast members, the scenes came off more forced than anything else.

but that is my complaint for the later seasons, like S7. I didn't really have that complaint for any of the earlier seasons. Your example in Evolution is a perfect example ;)

I've had a couple of drinks, so I probably shouldn't be spewing forth on LJ, but...

I agree with you on Daniel/Vala. Which is odd, since I wrote Daniel Jackson Unbound in response to spoilers for Prometheus Unbound.

But I really only liked Daniel/Vala when it was sort of a one-time thing. I tend to prefer my main characters unattached. It's just me. That way I can ship them any which way, later, in fic. Because I am a canon whore.

For the record, I almost never, ever read Daniel/Vala fic. It just holds no interest for me. I liked them better as antagonists, though I find the strictly canon portrayal okay. I don't find it overly 'shippy', especially in Season 10 (in spite of the date-that-wasn't - I'm taking Daniel's word on that :) )

Jack made me want to shoot him in the last couple of seasons. And I cringe when he makes an appearance. I loved the character for years, but now... I dunno. He's just off. I can couch it in canon. He's lost something in between being a temporary Tok'ra host and being frozen for a while. Jack is now slightly cracked. And not all that funny anymore.

Uh, I think that's all. So much for my "Do not post while drunk" rule...

Nah, you were coherent.

Unattached main characters are so nice because then you can anything you want in the fandom. But it also means you aren't stuck in a very limited scope of the characters. Though, I find it all funny considering your basically birthed the Daniel/Vala part of the fandom.

So far, in s10, I don't find their scenes shippy, so I'm okay. And I can take that over the scenes in s9 (or even PU) because Daniel irritated me in those scenes. So, my issue is less with Vala and more with Vala affecting Daniel, if that makes sense. In fact, I enjoy them toned down. But I think Vala would have served better as a recurring cast member. But that didn't happen so it's not worth whining about ;)

I don't know what to think about Jack. I still love Jack. My love for Jack cannot be diminished. In fact, it grew once I heard he was leaving and that is when I became more of a Jack fangirl. (When I joined the fandom, Daniel had already left and come back, so I didn't have to deal with that.)The Jack of the later seasons cannot compare to the one of the earlier seasons. But I didn't dislike Jack from the later seasons, except for some moments in S7 that made me cringe.

I am confused over him, though. It's obvious RDA didn't want to play anymore and that he was very tired. At the same time. I've read interviews with him from this year, and he seemed excited for coming back and doing something, especially getting involved with more meaty guest spots later down the line. He also seemed disappointed TPTB stuck him on more SGA eps than SG-1. It sounded like he was feeling a little renewed after having a break. (Not counting 200 much because that was liek crack for all.)

I honestly feel like TPTB didn't know what to write for him anymore, just like they sort of ran out of ideas for Daniel in S5.

So I don't know. I just feel RDA got really tired and Jack became really tired as an extention of that. They're all probably really crazy by now and shouldn't be allowed to go off too far on their own in the real world. They must have agents watching them all the time to make sure they gon't go pop.

I find it all funny considering you basically birthed the Daniel/Vala part of the fandom.

It really is, isn't it? Sometimes I feel a bit guilty about it, but it was all prefaced on the idea that Vala was a one-shot. And personally, I really loved seeing a snarky, pissy, annoyed Daniel.

Like you, I would have preferred Vala as a recurring character. While I enjoy seeing that side of Daniel, a little goes a long way. I don't want it all the time.

S10 has been much better for that whole dynamic. Daniel and Vala aren't quite so joined at the hip. Since I also like Daniel/Sam, I have really missed seeing those two together.

So far I'm hopeful about the back half of season 10.

This made me LAUGH. And I needed a good laugh after this week. I'm so there with you. I actually miss MALPs, ya know? I miss seeing the wonder of what's on that world. Now all we see is people traipsing through on Ori business or on one of the ships.

2004, huh? That would have put me firmly in the realm of Buffy and Angel land, still. And poor, poor Firefly... At any rate, I was still firmly entrenched in Jossverse and hadn't discovered Stargate goodness yet.

Did I say 2004? I started in 2003. Well, October 2003. (I am such a geek to remember these things.) I remember because I was on vacation doing nothing when I caught SG-1. Actually, I was watching Hercules on Scifi. SG-1 came on right after. Heh.

I'd given up on Jossverse a while ago at that point. I only watched s1 and s2 of Buffy and I never watched Angel. Then I was back with Joss with Firefly. I really, really got into Firefly which proceeded to get canceled. I was still missing X-Files. And then I got into Smallville which I was loving until S3 and I didn't like the direction the show took. (Later I found out S3 ended up being the best season there is, but by then I was consumed by Stargate.)

Why the secretly part of shipping Sam/Daniel? I think they're cute. Be it friendshippy or more, they're just very sweet together.

Ah, it's sort of a joke. I'm basically a gen person. And I find it hypocritcal to say: I don't wany any ship on the show!!! But Sam and Daniel are okay...

Really, though, Sam/Daniel is about as close to a real ship as I get for the show. I'd just prefer that they all stay friends. Fandom is different, though, and I think people can have a blast and do whatever they want. Yet, I still bemoan the lack of gen ;)
knightshadedknightshade on February 24th, 2007 03:10 pm (UTC)
Ah, okay. *grins* I really didn't want to be a Jack/Sam ship type person and fought it but any pretense was gone after seeing Divide and Conquer.

It's interesting because the people I knew in SG-1 fandom before I was in it are basically gen writers, so it didn't seem to me like that was all that unusual. They're all Jack whumpers though. ;-)
