SV: "Blue" and SPN: "Fresh Blood"

I foresee myself committing SPN fic in the near future. Maybe if I get it out of my system, like I did with Smallville, I'll be okay. But I won't allow myself to do it until I get some original fic goals completed.

Onto the eps...

I liked this episode a lot more than I thought I would. I found Lara a bit stiff, but the concept was interesting. We also got an episode where Clark was angry he lost his powers and didn't feel relieved they were gone. This is a huge step in his characterization.

While Clark is still a bit too whiny, so far this season has been all about Clark which rocks. Last season, I was really disappointed how Clark seemed like a supporting character. And when he did have stories, it never focused on him or his family. It was odd.

I am so happy with Clark this year :) And I like how Clark/Lana is slowly unraveling, even if they are trying.

Chloe and Lana didn't really have much to do, but it was nice to see them. The cast has grown so much that it makes sense to me that the characters would cycle in importance depending on the story. This is a very good thing for storytelling.

I was convinced there would be no Lex in this episode until he popped up with Grant, and then wow. I really feel this is what was missing last season - we never got to see this part of Lex because he was so hung up on Lana. I liked Lexana and all, but they never let the characters have their own purpose separate from each other. This year they are.

I was a little uneasy about the Lois/Grant stuff, but they brought up all the issues that made me nervous, so I was satisfied. I love how the writers are allowing all of the characters to have some depth and to really show both their strengths and weaknesses. Chloe's jealous. Lois is impulsive. Lex is manipulative. Lana is dark. And Clark and Kara have their own struggles.

I absolutely loved the Lex and Grant/Julian story. I need to go back and review that story from its S2/S3 roots, and I seriously wish I hadn't been spoiled for it, but wow. Is that even possible? Is this a retcon or does it actually work? Lucas makes more sense but how the heck does Julian work? They better have a good explantion for it because the Chloe retcon while an interesting plot twist, wasn't handled expertly and was clunking with conflicting canon. We'll see. It has the potential to be awesome.

And my favorite part was where Lex warned him about Lois Lane. Ack, so iconic!

Lionel still wins. And now they are addressing the differences between Jor-El and the voice in the FOS. Yay!

Overall, I am very very satisfied.

Fresh Blood

This is another episode I wasn't sure I'd like. I'm a huge fan of urban legends and that component of the show is what held my interest. The other element that keeps me is the emotion. I was first drawn in last Thanksgiving when I caught the last 20 minutes of In My Time of Dying, but that is a different story ;)

I never saw Gordon's initial episode, so I'm sure I've missed out on a lot. And I assume this vampire has been on before too? Anyway, I *loved* this episode. Like Smallville, it addressed a lot of concerns I had about the characters and certain storylines and it pretty much validated my feelings that the characters have been in character all this time. I know there are those that disagree with me, but that's fine :)

Bela doesn't bug me much anymore, though I still feel Ruby fits better into the plot. I also liked that friend of Gordon's more in this episode than last time.

But the characters and the plot were great in this. Yay! As an older sibling, I relate a lot to Dean and I often view the Sam and Dean relationship in terms of my own with my brother. (We're not exactly the same - our personalities are different and we're obvious not brothers, heh.) Even so, I tend to tear up in scenes like that. So this episode really did hit me in certain ways as an older sibling.

Very pleased. I just prefer watching shows on DVD. So yay for awesome Thursdays!

It's a shame I have to wait about a month before no new episodes :(
