The Direction of Chloe
The Direction of Chloe

Over the next couple of days, I'll probably be spamming LJ because I need some good healthy distractions. The first of those will be Smallville posts. In fact, I wanted to start off with Clark since he's the star and it's his story, but I have so much to say about him it's going to take a while ;) So I'll talk about Chloe instead.

Chloe is one of my fave characters on Smallville. I've always loved Chloe. I still do. She's always made an excellent supporting cast member. But my stance on the character is not a popular one among my fellow fans and I doubt it ever will be. That doesn't make me any less of a fan.

That said, I'm kind of excited and interested in seeing where Chloe is heading in Season 8. Some vague spoilers in here. You've been warned.

I started watching Smallville in S1. I watched for Clark growing up, but I liked Chloe right away. She was bright and cheerful with an infectious smile, but also curious with emotional depth.

I've never been bothered by her early story arcs. I liked that she loved Clark, was jealous of Lana yet still tried to be her friend, and even went as far as betraying Clark's trust. It gave her an intense storyline. Season 3 is still one of my favorite seasons.

I enjoyed her in Season 4 with her interaction with big cousin Lo, and how she learned Clark's secret. That Clark and Chloe stuff in S4 was great.

I enjoyed her trying to get her feet wet as a reporter in S5. I liked how she kept still trying to push Clark and Lois into journalism with her. But I also liked how she was starting to struggle a bit.

I started to lose some interest in her during S6 because she didn't seem to have much to do. Then TPTB brought in the meteor freak storyline. At first, I was angry when I heard about such an apparent retcon, but in the end I decided it wasn't a bad move. Maybe finally she would get back to having her own distinct storyline, something she really didn't have since S3 or S4. This show loves irony and there is nothing more ironic than becoming what you've been investigating for a good chunk of your life. Plus, I thought Chloe/Jimmy was cute.

I didn't expect Chloe/Jimmy to turn into an angsty mess and that was disappointing. I still like the pairing, but only when it's lighter and sweet. It seems they bring out the best and worst in each other.

Season 7 wasn't so great for Chloe, imo. I kept waiting and waiting to see her power explored and everything happened in offscreenville. In fact, I don't even know what S7 was about half the time because everything seemed to happen offscreen. S7 really picked up in the finale arc, but that was more about Clark. (So not complaining about CLark focus here. Yay!)

I've been reading the Season 8 spoilers and so far I'm excited. I really want to see what is going on with Chloe. She's been a character in transition for so long and I want to see where her destiny takes her. Even before she found out she was a freak, her journalistic sensibilities had started to change. She began to hack more and more and she assisted Clark in most of his heroic endeavors. She seems to be working at Isis which makes sense due to her meteor powers. I kind of see Chloe as this model of how meteor affected people can be good - not everyone goes mad, insane, or evil. And because she is so deeply invested on not being one of those crazy freaks, she's going to be out there trying to help people who are metahumans if they are at a crossroads.

What I really want to see is more of Chloe struggling to find herself. Discovering she was infected is such a huge life changing event that it's natural for her to readjust her priorities. While I would have preferred to see Chloe stay in journalism (and you never know - maybe she goes back one day), I think this is a good fit for her right now in her life. She wants to help people. She enjoys her role in helping Clark and Oliver. She has an ability that seems to get stronger and grow. She's got amazing potential. It just really excites me from a character development point of view.

I also have to say I'm excited about the Chloe and Doom parallel. Chloe is a healer and a "light" character whereas Davis Bloome is a destroyer and "dark" character. That dynamic should be great if done right. And I am not even talking in a shippy way.

I know a lot of people are angry about Chloe and her direction. Some people feel it's all AM's fault for what they perceive as the change in her character. Some people AM is putting too much of herself into Chloe. Others feel it's all Erica Durance's fault. It's the writers. It's any number of things. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But like I said, I'm pretty happy with her development. I feel like TPTB are giving her something to do - the past two seasons she didn't get to do much at all and we all know AM has the acting chops to pull off some great stuff. So I'm curious as to what happens to her in S8. :)

I have some thoughts on other characters and pairings that I'll touch on later.

I'm actually quite pleased by the way Chloe's career has been handled. Once Chloe started working at the Planet and Lois came aboard I was really at a loss for how the show would treat what we know the Superman future to be. I don't see any other way to do it (short of shuffling Chloe off the show) than to have her grow and take a different path and leave Lois to take up the journalism one.

I really liked it when Chloe became a meteor freak. It just made so much sense on a storytelling level for her to become what she was so obsessed about. And it's natural that that would alter her desires and goals in life.

Aw, I love Chloe. She was the first character that I really, really liked on this show, and I still love her. I had no idea some people didn't like the direction of her character, but that makes sense. I don't think there's ever been a character that everyone liked all the time.

For me, once I really loved Chloe, I could overlook a lot in the writing department. I've always been disappointed during times when they used her character less, but I've always felt the same about her. She's still one of my favorite characters.

It's interesting, too... When we started watching Smallville with the family (the guys *g*), my husband thought Lana was pretty, but it wasn't long before he loved Chloe, and my son also loves Chloe. lyraeinne does, too, of course. I guess we're a Chloe-loving family. :-)
